Stain Removal Tips from Bowmanville’s Steam Magic

Steam Magic has a wealth of information available to you regarding carpet and upholstery stain removal. As with most stains, the sooner you can treat it, the better chance you have of getting it out entirely. Using our Stain Removal Guide, you should be able remove a common stain before it sets into your carpet or upholstery.

Synthetic-Fibre Rugs

For common stains (wine, ketchup, chocolate, coffee, tea, beer, milk, tomato sauce, berries, hard candy, juice, soda, Gatorade and Kool-Aid) on synthetic-fibre carpets and rugs, Steam Magic recommends the following steps:

  1. Create a detergent solution by mixing 1/4 teaspoon of a translucent liquid dishwashing detergent into one cup of lukewarm water in a bowl.
  2. Create a white vinegar solution by mixing one cup of white vinegar with two cups of water in a bowl. For bad spills, place a 1/2-inch-thick stack of white paper towels over the stain and lay a glass baking dish on top for 15 minutes before proceeding.
  3. Dip a dry white cloth (or white paper towel with no printing) into the detergent solution, dab repeatedly and then press and hold the cloth on the spot for a few seconds.
  4. Wait 15 minutes while the stain breaks down and then soak up the excess liquid with a dry white cloth.
  5. Dip a dry cloth into the vinegar solution, dab repeatedly and then press the cloth on the spot for a few seconds.
  6. Wait another 15 minutes while the white vinegar solution removes any residual detergent that, if left in the carpet, can attract dirt.
  7. Rinse by blotting with a cloth soaked in lukewarm water.
  8. Wait one hour while the carpet dries completely.
  9. For as long as you see the stain lightening, repeat these steps until it is gone.
